Bryophyte flora in upland forests at different successional stages and in the various strata of host trees in northeastern Pará, Brazil Acta Botanica
Tavares-Martins,Ana Cláudia Caldeira; Lisboa,Regina Célia Lobato; Costa,Denise Pinheiro da.
In the northeastern region of the Brazilian state of Pará, approximately 90% of the forested areas are secondary forests. Secondary forests are interesting areas for floristic studies aimed at determining the effects that clear-cutting has on bryophyte communities. The aim of this study was to compare upland forests at different successional stages and the various strata of host trees, in terms of the bryophyte species composition. Bryophyte specimens were collected between August 2005 and September 2006 from host trees in primary and secondary forests of different ages and of different heights, within the municipality of Capitão Poço, in the state of Pará. The vertical distribution of bryophytes was evaluated in 15 host trees within the primary forest. We...

Chemical and mineralogical soil atributes from Comperj area due to variations in lithotype, landscape position and vegetation cover PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Gomes, João Bosco Vasconcellos; Curcio, Gustavo Ribas; Dedecek, Renato Antonio; Ramos, Michele Ribeiro.
Establishing Comperj (petrochemical complex Petrobras and partner companies at Itaboraí city, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) involves a great impact on natural environment, while it is an opportunity for actions of environmental compensation. The objectives of this study were to characterize soil chemistry and mineralogy of Comperjarea, based on landscape, particle size distribution and soil morphology, also considering different parent materials, landscape positions (shoulder, backslope and footslope at the hillslope and toeslope at floodplain) and vegetation cover groups. Different landscape positions, comparing toeslope and average hillslope, have differential behavior on several chemical attributes, besides those associated with landscape position...

The cultural valuation of biodiversity has taken on renewed importance over the last two decades as the ecosystem services framework has become widely adopted. Conservation initiatives increasingly use ecosystem service frameworks to render tropical forest landscapes and their peoples legible to market-oriented initiatives such as REDD+ and biodiversity offsetting schemes. Ecosystem service approaches have been widely criticized by scholars in the social sciences and humanities for their narrow focus on a small number of easily quantifiable and marketable services and a reductionist and sometimes simplistic approach to culture. We address the need to combine methods from each of the “three cultures” of natural science, quantitative...

Enrichment Planting in Secondary Forests: a Promising Clean Development Mechanism to Increase Terrestrial Carbon Sinks Ecology and Society
Hawryshyn, Jessica; Department of Biology and McGill School of Environment, McGill University; jessica.hawryshyn@gmail.com; Senikas, Alexandra Vyta; Department of Biology and McGill School of Environment, McGill University; alexandra.senikas@mail.mcgill.ca; Potvin, Catherine; Department of Biology and McGill School of Environment, McGill University; Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute; catherine.potvin@mcgill.ca.
With the increasing need to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations, afforestation and reforestation (A/R) projects are being implemented under the Kyoto Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and under the voluntary carbon (C) market. The specific objective of A/R C projects is to enhance terrestrial sinks. They could also provide low-income communities in developing countries with a source of revenue, as well as a number of ecological and social services. However, feasibility issues have hindered implementation of A/R CDMs. We propose enrichment planting (EP) in old fallow using high-value native timber species as a land-use alternative and a small-scale C projects opportunity. We present EP in the context of ongoing work in a poor indigenous community in...

Forests as landscapes of social inequality: tropical forest cover and land distribution among shifting cultivators Ecology and Society
Coomes, Oliver T.; Department of Geography, McGill University; oliver.coomes@mcgill.ca; Takasaki, Yoshito; Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo; takasaki@e.u-tokyo.ac.jp; Rhemtulla, Jeanine M.; Department of Forest & Conservation Sciences, University of British Columbia; jeanine.rhemtulla@ubc.ca.
Can social inequality be seen imprinted in a forest landscape? We studied the relationship between land holding, land use, and inequality in a peasant community in the Peruvian Amazon where farmers practice swidden-fallow cultivation. Longitudinal data on land holding, land use, and land cover were gathered through field-level surveys (n = 316) and household interviews (n = 51) in 1994/1995 and 2007. Forest cover change between 1965 and 2007 was documented through interpretation of air photos and satellite imagery. We introduce the concept of “land use inequality” to capture differences across households in the distribution of forest fallowing and orchard raising as key land uses that affect household welfare and the sustainability of...

Insights from a large-scale inventory in the southern Brazilian Atlantic Forest Scientia Agricola
Vibrans,Alexander Christian; Gasper,André Luís de; Moser,Paolo; Oliveira,Laio Zimermann; Lingner,Débora Vanessa; Sevegnani,Lucia.
ABSTRACT: A key issue in large-area inventories is defining a suitable sampling design and the effort required to obtain reliable estimates of species richness and forest attributes, especially in species-diverse forests. To address this issue, data from 418 systematically distributed 0.4 ha plots were collected. Estimators of nonparametric species richness were employed to assess the floristic representativeness of data collected in three forest types in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The sampling sufficiency of forest attributes was evaluated as a function of sample size. Altogether, 831 tree/shrub species were recorded. The data acquired through the systematic sampling design were representative of both species richness and basal area. The confidence...

Natural forest regeneration in abandoned sugarcane fields in northeastern Brazil: floristic changes Biota Neotropica
Nascimento,Ladivania Medeiros do; Sampaio,Everardo Valadares de Sá Barretto; Rodal,Maria Jesus Nogueira; Silva,Suzene Izídio da; Lins e Silva,Ana Carolina Borges.
Surveys were undertaken to examine the floristic changes during secondary succession in three areas of 12 and three of 20-year-old secondary forests in Pernambuco State, Brazil. Two hundred and six species were identified, with 136 being found in the 12-year-old secondary forest and 161 species in the 20-year-old forest. Fabaceae and Myrtaceae were the most important families, increasing in species numbers with regeneration age. Of the 216 species, 115 were trees, 48 shrubs, 16 herbaceous plants, and 24 woody lianas, without significant differences between the two regeneration site ages. NMDS analysis revealed a formation of two floristic groups, distinguishing secondary and mature forests, with a further division within secondary forests in accordance...

Seed size influence on germination responses to light and temperature of seven pioneer tree species from the Central Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Aud,Fabiana F.; Ferraz,Isolde D.K..
In Amazon secondary forests are dominated by pioneer species that typically produce large amounts of small and dormant seeds that are able to form a persistent soil seed bank. Seed dormancy in this group of species is overcome by environmental conditions found in open areas, such as high irradiation or alternating temperatures. Nevertheless, a variety of germination responses to environmental factors is known among pioneers; some of them may germinate in diffuse light or in darkness condition at constant temperature. Seed mass can be considered as one of the factors that promotes this variety. Regarding species with very small seeds, it seems that the trigger for germination is light and for larger seeds temperature alternation may be a more important...
